Geography- Jamaica is an island nation in the West Indies located in the Caribbean Sea. It has an
estimate population of 2.8 million people, more than double that of Rhode Island, and less than half
that of Massachusetts. It is south of Cuba and for comparison it is just under the size of the state of
Connecticut. Jamaica is 145 miles in length and 50 miles in width at its widest point, it's area being
4,243 square miles. The capital of the country is Kingston, and their government system is a
parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy, with Queen Elizabeth II serving as the Jamaican
monarch at this time.
Tourism- Jamaica welcomes over 2.5 million tourists each year, and the island is also a leading
Caribbean destination for cruise ship visitors. People love visiting Jamaica mostly for sightseeing, golf,
tennis, diving, shopping and honeymoons, hiking, river rafting, attending reggae concerts, visiting the
Bob Marley museum, to study English and Jamaican patois or just for fun and relaxation.
Music- Music is a big part of Jamaican culture, and the genres of Jamaica include folk music and
many unusual genres, such as mento, ska, rocksteady, dub music, dancehall, ska jazz, and of course the
most famous being reggae. Jamaica's music culture is a fusion of the United States (rhythm, blues
and soul). Reggae is especially popular through the huge fame of Bob Marley. Jamaican music also
influences on music styles such as rap.
