For my presidency report I was giving a man named James Abram Garfield. He was elected the 20th president of the United States of America in 1881 .Since he was assassinated before he finished his first term he only served from March 4, 1881 to September 19, 1881. Garfield was born on November 19, 1831 in Moreland Hills, Ohio. He was also the last of the seven presidents to be born in a log cabin. His mother gave birth to him in a wooden log cabin. At a young age his father Abram Garfield , a man known for his ability to wrestle well died so he grow up with his mother and five other older siblings. But he also taught himself how to write with both of his hands. He had always wanted to be at sea and explore. Soon James did follow his dreams and worked for a short time on a canal boat. ( Curtis ) He ran away at age sixteen to work on the canal boat. But James fell overboard more than 10 times and soon had to return home to get well. While becoming better he then decided to make it in the world with his brains then his strength.
Wanting to become the best, James Garfield was a part-time teacher and carpenter while also going to Geauga Academy in Ohio. He took care of himself as a part- time teacher at a district school. For three years he educated himself at Eclectic Institute and took care of himself as a school janitor. As one of the oldest students put in the school James went to William College in Massachusetts at age 23.
When he was 18 he went to a religious church and was baptized. He dreamed of be a reformer with the antislavery movement. Even though he was very strict with his school work he did love things like fishing, hunting, and billiards. Known as a handsome man who once dated abou 3 woman at the same time he eventually fell in love with Lucretia Rudolph, a classmate in college.
