The Convalescent Throughout the short story, “The Convalescent,” written by Jessica Anthony, the narrator utilizes the perspectives of first person and third person. However, in my revision of the last passage, I chose to include a change by using the second person. Some pieces of this story are very detailed like the first paragraph, which encounters sentences in the third person such as this one, “Among the living was a young girl named Adelpha Salus Santino who, after digging through rubble at the old Vehiculous Automoteres mexicanos factory to find both of her parents suffocated, picked up a dusty knife, held it to her middle, and then stabbed herself quick in the stomach.” This sentence provides a very thorough explanation of what is happening, …show more content…

It is hard to tell who these people are and that provides a large gap in detail that we can not gain from the story. It provides the idea that these other people get to do important things that the narrator does not get to do. However, the lack of detail makes it unclear who these people are and the effect that they truly have on the narrator. Changing this passage into the second person becomes much more direct to the reader. The second-person perspective was never used throughout the story but adding it here makes the whole story feel equally detailed, whereas before there felt to be a large gap in detail between the last passage and the rest of the story.
