John Marshall, who had only studied law for six weeks, is the best known chief justice of the Supreme Court. He was appointed by President John Adams in 1801 and held that position until his death in 1835. As chief justice, he stuck with his federalist’s views and helped shape the Supreme Court into what it is today. Federalism is the system used to divide the powers between the national and state government, and Marshall’s court is important today because he defined the powers between the federal and state governments. Although the Jeffersonian Republic did not take much of a liking to Marshall, he was still able to work hard as the chief justice.
