Yes, John proctor is a tragic hero, he fits all of the "requirement" in most standards. Proctor is of a noble status, at least to Abigail, but he is thought highly of in the community. He also has a hubris, this is shown when he does not believe that he will be caught after having an affair with Abigail. John's downfall is when Mary Warren accused him of working with the devil, and he further proved her point when saying "God is dead". At that point, everyone in the community had believed that he was possessed by the devil. He thought about confessing because he could then say that he is not practicing witchcraft anymore, and not be hanged.
