Beliz Esen for the People Born on March 17, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, John Wayne Gacy was having a rough childhood. Constantly abused and conflicted about his sexuality, he lived a hard life. Then, 1968 came around. Gacy was convicted for sexual assault and went on to rape and kill 33 teenage boys. He was known as the Killer Clown. Dressing up as a clown use to be just job for him, organizing kids parties and cultural activities, now became his way to lure teens in so he would be able to live out his gruesome fantasies. Prosecutors must perform research and investigate the cases they bring to court.” (Educational-Portal.com) As stated above, prosecuting attorneys are very important people to the work force, this also means that a lot of schooling and hard work goes into this. Rigorous hours of studying and learning everything you can about this topic is only half of it. After you do all that, you will need to know how to apply that information and make it work in front of a jury of your peers. Education is important in all jobs, but for a job like this, your education needs to be as extensive as possible. Attorneys are required to receive their bachelor degree, complete law school and pass the bar exam1. Although, there is not an exact undergraduate major that is specialized for students interested in becoming advocators for their community, most take courses that will help build their reading and writing skills. Such as, political science, English, philosophy, psychology etc. Critical reading and writing are the two most helpful and important skills that an attorney could posses. To be able to put away your own beliefs and thoughts and completely devote yourself to a case requires a strong and powerful mentality. “Meanwhile, defenders are always on the defensive. In a social climate that exalts crime control over everything else,9 defenders are barely tolerated.' ° It is sometimes hard for the public to distinguish defenders from the "scum" we represent. 1 We are often seen as our clients' accomplices' 2 or, at best, their apologists. When defenders are asked, as we often are, "How can you defend those people?,"' 3 there is an assumption that there is something wrong with "those people" and something wrong with those of us who choose to defend them.” (Georgetown Law) Even thought this article isn't about prosecutors specifically, it demonstrates the kinds of thoughts that run though law enforcement when they talk to criminal defenders. People are in utter disbelief that someone would dedicate time to defend someone guilty of a crime. But that is just it, prosecutors shouldn't have this biased opinion towards anything other than getting justice for the victim. Anything else, is just unnecessary and doesn't strengthen your case. To be a good prosecutor is one thing, but to be an excellent one is another. The only way to achieve that is to put away your emotions and fight for justice.
