John Winthrop’s “A Model of Christian Charity” is an enjoyable piece to read because of the extreme expectations that the Puritans placed upon themselves. From the beginning of the piece, Winthrop reveals that social inequalities exist even in an ideal society, but the wealthy are to help the less fortunate and that “[l]ove is the bond of perfection” (171). These and many other examples of the rules of a model society are seen throughout “A Model of Christian Charity” prove that although most countries in today’s age are obviously not ideal societies, they can be known “as a city upon a hill” (177) if the countries were to follow the rules that John Winthrop
