Everybody grows up someday, but Tim from My Brother Sam is Dead and Johnny from Johnny Tremain grew up at such a young age. Many teenagers go into adulthood ,however if they were 16 in the 1700’s they would be considered adults too many people. In Johnny Tremain, when someone asked if Johnny was a man or a kid, he stated “A boy in a time of peace and a man in time of war” (Forbes, 1943) In Johnny Tremain, Johnny had to become an apprentice because his mother was dead and he needed food and shelter. When Dove burnt Johnny’s hand on purpose, Johnny swore to get revenge, for Dove, Mr. Lapham tried to tell Johnny to forgive Dove and forget what happened, but Johnny Still wanted revenge, however when Johnny met Rab (his role model), he forgave Dove. In the book My Brother Sam is Dead, Tim had to work at the ranch and help at the tavern because his father had died, and Tim’s brother Sam was fighting in the American Revolution. When the war hit Tim’s hometown (Redding, CT) he saw Ned be beheaded which made Tim think about if he still wanted to be a part on the British. For example, Johnny and Tim both grew up at such a young age because they lost someone very important to them. Tim lost his brother and his father while Johnny lost his mother. Johnny and Tim also had to overcome assignments because Johnny had to use his other hand because of his roommate Dove, burnt his hand which forced Johnny to get another job on, the other hand, Tim had to overcome the loss of his own father.
