Joseph Boyden's Three-Day Road

As I have started reading Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden, I have noticed a writing style that was new to me, and have noticed I do not like the way he decided to write this novel. I started reading this novel with an open mind set as the plot interested me a lot, however as I continued reading I noticed Boyden flips back and forth between past and present. The idea of past and present is really interesting and a great idea, but most times I have noticed that there is no indicator of when the story is switching from present to past. I am still debating whether this type of choppy transitioning was intentional or not, either way, I do not enjoy it. I have, however, noticed that sometimes Boyden uses transitioning sentences before switching,
