Slavery was more than physical it was psychological warfare too based on the amount of psychological tactics that was used to have an influence on Africans that shaped society. I can infer that’s why it is so important to understand the Epistemology of not only slaves but the process of slaving as well. Joseph C. Miller “The problem of slavery as history: A global approach” had us questioning the essence of slavery, arguing that it must be looked upon broadly as a process rather than as an institution.
Millers ultimate goal was to challenge people to think differently about slavery. He was more interested in the psychology or Epistemology of the effects of slavery and the thought process behind both the slavers and the slaves. He talked about

One can not simply understand the style of slavery there because freedom was equal to vulnerability. Slaves were vulnerable once they experienced freedom because once they gained their independence they realized that they still would be in a position where they have no control and the lack the power of influence to survive. Considering that most of all slaves were dependent on the slaver, they were susceptible and worked for food, shelter and clothes. This was inevitable because as slaves they had no prior knowledge of how to live as an individual. Not only did they not know where to go or what to do but they also had to deal with outside factors. They had no prior family wealth, barely spoke the language, didn't understand capitalism or even how to gain wealth and riches. Most of the slaves went back to do doing the same exact work they were doing prior to freedom because that was the only thing that was familiar to
