There are many attributes that make up servant leaders. Several in particular can be seen across all types of successful servant leaders, in all fields of service and work. One such attribute is listening. As a leader, I strive to listen both critically and empathetically, to hear others’ ideas, concerns, and criticisms. As Key Club President, I wanted to ensure I created an environment where all members could speak and be heard. I introduced opportunities where club members could speak to officers one-one-one, to facilitate the sharing of ideas, questions, and concerns that didn’t always occur in large-scale meetings. Through these opportunities, I’ve listened and worked with many members of my club I wouldn’t have been heard otherwise.
A key aspect of servant leadership is building communities. Throughout my time in Key Club, I’ve continuously strived to create a community of service and leadership at my school. To do so, I’ve organize service projects that engage students in and out of Key Club, to create a community inspired by service that stretches across my school. Through fundraisers and volunteer opportunities all students can engage in, a sense of fellowship has formed, making our Key Club not only a place for service, but a place of solidarity as well.

Finding causes I believe in enables me to put my full effort into service, and inspire others to do the same. Recently, I became passionate about the Thirst project. After hearing them speak at Fall Rally and District Convention last year, I organize an awareness-initiative and fundraiser for their cause. I worked directly with them to bring their representatives to my school, giving all students the opportunity to hear about their mission, and what they could do to help.
