The central theme of “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” is hope. People are always hoping for their favorite show to come on t.v or hoping their best friend to come over. But not this kid, Junior, he is hoping to have a good education to have a good life. Junior is the main character of the book. During the entire book, he is looking for hope to become fortunate in life, he is only 14. Also, keep in mind that he is an Indian growing up on the rez. So he was determined to move schools and he chose Reardan, since it's all advanced learning, and they had advanced learning that Junior wanted. But, Junior faces tough situations with family and friends. So eventually he makes it through it all and continues his education. This essay will present the different ways how this book expresses hope.
Now I will state a quote that shows hope in Junior’s life. In chapter 2 of the book, it states, "I want to go to Reardan," I said again. I couldn't believe I was saying it. In chapter 5 of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, it states, “I was starting to understand. He was a math teacher. I had to add my hope to somebody else's hope. I had to multiply my hope. ‘Where is hope?’ I asked. ‘Who has hope?’ "Son,’ Mr. P said. ‘You're going to find more and more hope the farther and farther you walk away from this sad, sad, sad reservation." This quote shows hope. Junior was stuck in life and he didn’t know what to do but, once Mr.P opened his eyes, he knew what to do. This supports my claim because this is Junior finding hope and understanding it. All his life he’s been in pain about his tribe and how they had become. He knew pain is real. Then he finds out, hope is also real. Next, let us analyze how Junior found hope in himself without someone showing him the
