The kidneys refer to the organs in the body which are responsible for removing toxins from the body. Kidneys come in pairs and are found in the abdominal cavity on each side of the spine. The main function of kidneys is to remove toxins from the blood and excrete them through urination.

What is a kidney failure?
When the kidneys fail to perform its task of removing toxins in the body, it can lead to a condition known as kidney failure. Kidney failure, also known as an end-stage renal disease, is the last stage of a chronic kidney disease which occurs when the kidney can no longer function without the help of dialysis or a kidney transplant.

There are many factors that can cause kidney failure which includes diabetes, pre-existing kidney disease, kidney trauma, kidney infections, kidney stones, and high blood pressure, among others. There also people who are more at risk of developing kidney failures such as those people with diabetes, those who are obese, those who smoke, and those who have a family history of a kidney disease.

Depending on the severity of the kidney disease, doctors may either recommend a patient to undergo dialysis or replace their kidneys with a kidney transplant.

Dialysis is a type of treatment method wherein a machine will manually filter and purify the blood of toxins. This machine will perform the functions of the kidneys, which the kidney can no longer do. It is a life-long treatment for a kidney transplant, as dialysis cannot cure kidney failure but can, instead, prolong life.

Meanwhile, a kidney transplant is a type of treatment method for kidney failure which totally replaces the kidney of a person. A kidney transplant can bring back the functions of the kidney in the body, however, it can be difficult to find a donor for a kidney transplant that is compatible with your body, and even then, the surgery may not be totally successful.
