A kidney stone is a crystalline, hard mineral material formed in the urinary tract or kidney. Kidney stones are responsible for blood in the urine, a high level of pain in the abdomen, flank, lower back or groin. Dehydration is one of the leading causes of kidney stone formation. People that have certain medical conditions, like gout, and people that take certain supplements or medications are at risk of kidney stone formation.

Kidney stones symptoms in men can vary and they depend on where the stone is located and how it is progressing. Kidney Stone attacks tend to occur during the night or early in the morning; they are not common during the afternoon.

The symptoms of a kidney stone attack include agonizing pain in the lower back below the ribs that spreads around to the abdomen and can extend into the groin area. The pain begins abruptly and continues for a few minutes and disappears, then it returns after 10 minutes or so. The patient usually cannot get comfortable, and sits, stands, reclines, or paces in an attempt to find a position that will bring relief.

If the stone is in the upper urinary tract or the kidney, the intense pain usually starts on the side of the back around the waist.
