Having chosen the Knights of the Crusades and their weaponry by way of contrast to regular foot soldiers as my canon subject. Conversely there was a definite difference in the way in which they lived on and off the battlefield. Recognizing and, distinguishing knights could be done from their swords, shields, or often choice of weaponry. Kingdom of Heaven like other films based on the crusades characterize them in this manner as well. The status afforded to knights and their ability to elevate this status in battle. Lance a spear-like weapon normally used from horseback and in battle. An argument for inclusion of a weapon might not seem important, but it can give some insight about those who carried it. This would be a nice lead in regarding the middle class and what role the knights contributed to this social class system that evolved. Strategies where often built around the availability of knights or the lack there of during battle.
Hence this discussion of military resources builds a comparison to modern warfare in addition to how economics plays a role. An army with well equipped knights and soldiers had the possibility of defeating much larger forces. Training was specific and extensive prior to battle. The knights were afforded certain advantages in relation to foot soldiers and attacking armies not on horseback.
Consequently during this period change was often a direct result of force. Larger or better train armies were often a reflection of a king’s power. In other words a king and his kingdom required a bit of muscle. Considering the frequency of attacks and a kingdoms desire for expansion.
