The knights Hospitaller was one the most powerful,influential and oldest Monastic Knight order in History. They have gone by several names throught History such as Hospitalers, the Order of Malta, the knights of Malta. They were formally known as the Hospitallers of St.John of Jerusalem. Then from 1309 to 1522 the Knights were refred to as the Order of the Knights of Rhodes. From 1530 to 1798 they were the Sovereign and Military Order of the Knights of Malta. Then from 1834 to 1961 they were the Knights Hospitaller of St. John of Jerusalem. The Knights Hospitaller are still active to this day under the name of The Sovergin Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta. The order continued their efforts against the Muslims and Barbary pirates that would target ports surrounding Sicily. The continual activity from the order infuriated the Ottomans who were less than thrilled that the order had reestablished themselves. In 1565 Suleiman sent an a force of 40,000 men to overtake the order of only 700 knights strong. Doing so would also allow the Ottomans to gain foothold in Europe in order to launch assualts on Europe. The besiegment did not fair well for the Knights, most of the cities were destroyed and more than half of the remaining order was killed. The numbers decreased everyday and soon the order was unable to hold their fortifications. The Orders council wanted to withdraw to another Fort; however Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette refused to retreat. The Viceroy of Spain did not send aid to the Knights most likely to avoid exposing Sicily and Naples to attack. Soon another attack was launched on the Knights to over take them. Most of the Knights holding the defenses were wounded themselves. The Order had managed to repair much of the garrisons and breaches. The Ottomans were proving unable to take Malta. To top Malta's fortifications many of the Ottomans were falling sick as well as supplies falling low. The troops moral was rapidly falling due to the failure of their efforts.
