Throughout this packet I noticed several different aspects and opinions on how the South would be treated due to the fact that the North was now in control. This was a fear for many southerners as they were weary and tense due to their past actions. Many southerners were very afraid and angry towards the North and made rude assumptions as to how and if they would try to reconstruct the South to better fit them, and not the southerners. There were some southerners that had the thought that they fought very nobly in the war and did it all to preserve a government that was seen as superior in their eyes and basically a covenant with God. Andrew Johnson was a Southern Democrat and tried to help with the South during reconstruction. Johnson had the same mindset over political issues and race as his fellow white Southerners. Johnson began to reconstruct the south on his own. In my opinion, although he sided with the union he jumped back to help the south get off as easy as possible when the time came. That does not seem to come off as a good presidential quality. Johnson began to pardon former confederate soldiers. All they had to do was swear an oath and all was fixed. Yet more prominent people like federal officials and higher ranked individuals who owned property worth $20,000 had to travel to Washington to be pardoned. Although I do not fully agree with his actions, this evened them out a bit. Then the issue of slaves being free arose. Former slaves traveled everywhere. They were looking for work or a new place to live or they were just going on adventures to discover the world. This infuriated former slave owners who went on rages and beat blacks and even made them go back into work for them or they killed them. As a result of this Johnson created a new law called the Black
