LPN is an abbreviation for License Practitioner Nurse. It started in 1892 with the Young Women Christian Association in New York City where they gave the first training. In the early 1900s and school called Ballard, which is also in New York, was the first official school to give the nurses the training and teaches that they needed. Practical nurses started off being taught to take care of the sick as well as homemaking skills. After the 1900s, the LPNs became more adapted to the procedures in 1917 by the National League for Nursing.
During World War 1, they were in need of more practical nurses. The Army formed a group call The Army School of Nursing so they would have more practical nurses to help the wounded soldiers. The Smith Hughes Act …show more content…
The nurses work in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, group homes, private homes, etc.. What practical nurses do vary in where they want to work. If they work in a hospital they would mainly work on the care of ill patients, patients that has an injury or just has a surgery. (PracticalNursing, 2016) LPNs also would have to work under the supervision of an RN when they are caring for a patient. LPNs talk with the patients to see what all symptoms they are experiencing to see what medication they need to prescribe them to help and cure their problem. Practical nurses also are allowed to give their patients shots. Many patients can live in their homes or a family member’s home with the support of additional health care providers. (PracticalNursing, 2016) When they nurse work in nursing homes they have to help the patients with whatever they need. For example changing their feeding tubes, their diapers, clothes, etc..
LPNs are not allowed to do a lot of thing without the consent of a higher nurse. The main things a practical nurse cannot do it Administer IV drugs, to complete a health assessment they must have a RN sign off on it as well as when they develop a nursing plan, they can’t take verbal orders for a doctor, administrate blood products, access or flesh PICC lines, sub ports or any type of central line, administer total parental Nutrition, insulin drips or cardiac drips, or give chemo medications …show more content…
