Laissez-faire Supervisors vs. Authoritarian Supervisors
When individuals here the words laissez-faire supervisors, their immediate thought is that the supervisor is indifferent to their employees and the quality of the work produced. In contrast when individuals here the phrase autocratic or authoritarian supervisors they think of a supervisor who is highly assertive and rigid when it comes to employee work and work regulations. Despite the two being viewed in a negative perspective, one type of supervisor can provide the most benefit to their employees and the employee productivity is a laissez faire supervisor.
A main difference between these supervisors is their management styles. For instance, a laissez-faire supervisor utilizes a technique known as the hands-off technique which means that the level of supervision a supervisor provides to the employees is close to none (Yang). If an employee views their laissez-faire supervisor as someone who is providing them with an opportunity to grow and as a sign that the supervisor trusts their employee (Yang). This kind of supervisor will be viewed by an employee as having trust in their work allowing the employee to take more control over their work (Yang). Additionally, the employee will be able to help their co-workers by delegating the work responsibilities and authority evenly amongst the entire workforce. In contrast if a laissez-faire supervisor is viewed as a burden to the employees then the distance between the employee and supervisor will widen. Dissent will increase as employees develop the belief that the supervisor is not properly doing their responsibilities and ignoring their
