A social issue that has continued to show up in the news is sexual misconduct which has generated the hashtag me too movement. With stories coming out about Larry Nassar the former U.S.A gymnastics team doctor and Harvey Weinstein former film producer stories are being told across the world and sparking conversations that many have feared for a long time. Being a female myself and able to relate to this social issue which has been happening to women across the world for decades it is not any surprise that when reading articles, critical reasoning should be enacted upon. A type one bias was seen in all three media articles by slanting their stories in order to privilege the views of the people they are writing about. Whether that be the gymnasts in the Nassar case, the actresses in the Weinstein case, or the women in South Korea who are now speaking out. Each word and point discussed was carefully selected to not only be sensitive to the topic at hand but also for the women they were writing for. A type two bias that was made in each of the articles was that the accusations made without providing the information needed to challenge or falsify the claim. Some of the cases discussed have in fact been proven such as in the Nassar case where he was proven to be guilty in a court of law and was sentenced a life time in prison. However, in the Weinstein case it has not been proven that he is guilty nor did the article share any information on his side of the story. It was clear that this article constructed an opinion without mentioning or stating that the information has been proven. A peer reviewed source is an article that has gone through the peer review process and is typically written by faculty, researchers or scholars such as doctors or historians. When a researcher writes a paper it is submitted to an editor who has to approve it, it then gets sent to reviewers who are typically experts in the field to find any holes in the research. Once it passes the reviewers it either is approved or sent back for additional information. This is a process that is needed in order to ensure that that information is legitimate and comes from a reliable source. An example of a peer reviewed resource that was used for this paper was written by a registered nurse with a PHD. The article “Embarrassed and Sorry” discusses the authors own mindset and personal bias towards stories that were shared of sexual harassment but acknowledges that they recognized this bias and points out different viewpoints (Bradley-Springer, 2018). The first important note that the author made was that not only women are victims of sexual misconduct and not only men are the perpetrators. This is an important view point to analyze in order to practice breadth and looking at the issue from a different perspective.
