For instance, CAFTA, an expansion of NAFTA, was a policy in which the global market opened up free trade for the benefit of well-developed nations. This allowed countries like the United States to import their subsidized commodities into countries that were trying to sustain their domestic market, yet could not compete with transnational corporations. The passage of these policies highlights the concept of hegemony, in which powerful nations indoctrinate their structures of society onto underdeveloped nations as a way to control their formation of governments. Throughout many Latin American countries, the United States is notorious for installing military coups in order to swing the political dynamics toward a capitalist notion that supports global capitalism.
