When Laura and Howie got “kidnapped” by the sheriff they ended up running over his foot, “No he was acting strange, we hit him with a truck...."(173) So Brocks Cole point is that it supported the idea of when Laura and Howie felt something was off or something was sketchy about the deputy it made them do something crazy. So this means the reason Laura and Howie did something crazy was because they wanted to be safe. This shows that the kind of relationship they have is a little stronger than just a friendship. The bond that Howie and Laura have is one that they will always protect each other neither of them wanted each other to get hurt this is why they lead up to the crazy things. Of course, it is possible to disagree with the view that through all the choices that Laura and Howie made they based it off on their safety and instead argue that Laura and Howie were never forced to make these choices and could have made more mature choices. However, the weight of the evidence is on the other side. What must be remember is that Laura and Howie are still kids so the mature choices weren't coming up in their mind.
