The legalization of marijuana in Mexico can have positive and negative impacts on our society: impacts ranging from political, ethical and individual. Legalizing marijuana will allow people to have an easier access to it. People who are suffering pain, because of sickness or a terminal illness, can have access to marijuana to relieve some of their pain. Also, if the government legalizes marijuana they can regulate it´s production and supply, ending the drug cartels that currently provide it. However, legalizing it can also have negative effects: accidents, such as car accidents, may increase as marijuana lowers the alertness of people, as marijuana´s accessibility increases so does its consumption, which can lead to addiction of more harmful …show more content…
In the present day, drug cartels, in Mexico, are the ones who produce, supply and sell marijuana all across the country. Many, if not most, of the drug cartels, cause violence wherever they establish. Fights among different drug cartels exist and are very current; fights that end up in shootings and civilians end up caught in the of the crossfire. The civilians, caught in the middle of the violence between cartels, may undergo terrible wounds or even death. The legalization of marijuana could decrease the existence of drug cartels because the government would be the one who produces, supplies and manufactures the marijuana leaving drug cartels obsolete, thus, causing the diminishing if cartels. As the number of cartels declines so does the violence it provokes. Utilitarianism judges our actions based on the impact they have on others; an action will be considered correct if increments the well-being of a large number of people. Seen from a utilitarian perspective legalizing marijuana is a morally correct action because it will increment the well-being of a large number of people as they would be less exposed to violence and it´s possible consequences, thus, incrementing their well-being and …show more content…
Scientists have classified marijuana as a getaway drug; meaning that the consumption of marijuana can lead to the use of stronger and more addictive drugs, such as heroin and cocaine. As cocaine and heroin are more harmful and addictive drugs they can lead to a life filled with excess. Eudemonism poses that the ultimate good in life is happiness and one can achieve it doing virtuous activities and accordance with reason. A life filled with excess cannot be a happy life, therefore, excess impedes people to reach the ultimate good in life. A life with excess, in this case, a life filled with addiction to drugs, is not a good life. Legalizing marijuana in Mexico will increase the possibilities of people leading a life of excess instead of virtue and reason, leading them further away from the ultimate good, In a eudemonistic point, legalizing marijuana is not a good action, because it will prevent people from reaching the ultimate good in life,
