Nightjohn, by Gary Paulsen, has a theme of no matter what happens, do not lose hope. Hope is a character trait that is shared in the book from beginning to end. In the beginning of the novel, Sarny states that Mammy is getting breakfast ready, while Mammy is getting ready, she leans over the pot on the stove and prays, ”Lord Jesus, you come to make us free” (Paulsen 23).
