During the months in winter and spring of 1865, the life of Louis had changed drastically but for the best. Due to the end of the war, he had gotten so close to freedom by the end of spring. It all began when Boss moved all of his slaves to work in the Salt Works, which Louis and his wife, Matilda, agreed was the best time of their lives since being purchased by the McGeehes. They had an agreeable job, healthy baby, extraordinary privileges, and importantly forgot they were enslaved members. Louis had also made extra money from selling tobacco which Brooks, a superintendent of the works, had ordered for him. Sam was a very educated person who loved to learn what went on around town and enjoyed writing in his diary about each day. He had been living a relaxing life with his parents due to a number of hrs of free time he had. The war hadn't changed his life much. He didn't have to join the military cuz he was a minister and had appointments where he visited people's houses to preach. One thing, however, that seemed quite annoying in Sam's life was the fact there were rumors of Yankees constantly coming which were never true. Every time there was a warning of their arrival he and his father would always have to rush to the woods along with their animals cuz the Yankees would only take males as prisoners and would leave females and children alone. (61) After the Yankees were gone for good, there started to be a shortage of corn. There wasn't enough corn cuz the country officials agreed to give the corn only to the poor, which then led to the plan to have 2 men collect money from neighbors and take a train to get corn. (79) However, the amount of corn received was never enough. Sam had to go house to house to borrow money to pay shipping cost, but when he received enough, a gang had raided the boxcar and had sadly emptied Sam
