The Nature of a Good Story

I think what makes a good story is detail and how the story is told with detail and explanations, there are a lot of other factors that tie into what makes a good story such as theme, the plot, and characters, but those are the most important to me. If the story is easily read and you have a good idea of what is going on it is probably enjoyable. But what we really need to know is how Yann Martel describes the nature of a good story.
In the case of Life Of Pi, there are 2 stories being told. The first one is told in great detail, explaining every emotion felt and every detail explained. The second is told and it is very bland, it lacks emotion and does not compare to the first story. Although the second story is also considered more believable it does not make it the better story. Of course, the majority of people like the more detailed and emotion filled story more than the second one. Just because you like a story does not make it true or believable.

Although the book ends with you questioning what story really occurred, Pi leaves us with a powerful notion. After telling both stories to the reporters, he asks them “So tell me, since it makes no factual difference to you and you can’t prove the question either way, which story do you prefer? Which is the better story the story with the animals or the story without animals? The two men answer with the first story, the ones with animals. Pi tells them that is the story that goes with god.
Us as readers after finishing the book are left questioning what story was true. We all want to believe the first one because it all seemed so real. The fact of the matter is it is up to us.
