They could live at home, commute to school, and be encouraged to work part-time jobs to offset tuition costs and personal expenses” (Christenson pg. 14) Christenson shares that the goal of a community college other than the community type feeling it to create a way for students to afford to go to school. With financial aid and all other grants and scholarships offered the cost is decreased to, on average, $2,000 per year compared to universities with an average of $12,500 per year. In an interview with 19-year-old Jontae Thomas, who had already received many acceptance letters made his mother the happiest when receiving his final letter. “’I just like that school,’ Thomas’ mother told him. Thomas understood why: Classes are small, and teachers know their students by name. They also serve as student advisers and ‘would always have their door open to us,’” (Christenson pg. 13) Thomas chose to go to Arrupe College in Milwaukee and was pleased with his choice. Thomas says, “Most attractive of all was the opportunity to earn an associate degree without incurring financial debt.” (Christenson pg. 13) Christenson’s article is to help introduce the many benefits of community college, community college is for everyone who wants to save money, have smaller classes, and who want to have a personal experience in college. Verses those who want to sit in a class of 400 and be known as number 32584 instead of their actual
