He proposes that they should build a fire on the mountain to signal any passing ships wherein, Piggy’s glasses became a useful object in the process of starting a fire. After the fire was made, Piggy protests and criticizes the boys for not making a shelter first and worries that one boy is already missing after they failed to know the total number of boys there are. Jack’s tribe set fire to the whole forest to smoke Ralph out; even destroying whatever fruit is left on the island. The chase made the whole island consumed in flames and Ralph, running for his life and the hunters closely behind him, finally collapsed near the beach in front of a naval officer, who came with his party to investigate on the fire. Ralph, realizing the loss of innocence and what they have done, finally burst into tears while Jack and the other surviving boys begins to shake and sob too. The officer begins to feel moved and embarrassed by the children’s noises so he turns away to give them time to pull themselves
