The Louisiana Purchase, one of the best deals done for land, gave the United States a huge amount of territory, but how did they also retrieve Mexican lands such as California? It started off with the US, the Thirteen British Colonies to be exact, becoming an independent country, departing from Great Britain. The newborn country desired new land and opportunities and found them by expanding Westward. Many Americans thought that it was their destiny to grow and become a strong and successful nation. The Louisiana Purchase was a great start to America’s expansion, doubling the size of the Thirteen Colonies. They later decided they wanted to enlarge their land even more towards the West. After the Bill of Rights, the Ten Amendments, were published and added onto the Constitution, the US had a stable society because it protected the rights of Americans while having a strong central government. After the US became a stable and independent nation, things got better for Americans. They came to the realization that their population was growing and needed more land to accommodate that growth. They needed land to establish homes, roads, etc. The increase in the number of people also meant that they would need to have more economic opportunities. These opportunities may be fertile land for farming, valuable resources, new markets, etc. All these are necessary factors for a growing population. For these reasons, Americans thought it was their destiny to expand their land from coast to coast, and they called this Manifest Destiny. So in 1803, the US purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for only fifteen million. This was known as the Louisiana Purchase and it contained approximately 530 million acres of land. The reason why it was a really great deal for America was because France was in debt for a war they had to pay off against the
