Racial Injustice: To Kill a Mockingbird and Loving vs Virginia Racial injustice has been illustrated in countless writings based on real life events. Racial inequality is treating others unfairly and poorly based on the color of their skin. In To Kill a Mockingbird, it is written about an occurrence of racial injustice in the Tom Robinson case. Throughout the years, racial injustice has gotten better within our justice system, but has never truly gone away. In the Loving vs. Virginia case and To Kill a Mockingbird, racial injustice was expressed in both the book and the case. Loving vs Virginia is an example of racial injustice. In the end, the couple had to plead guilty, spend a year in jail, and then agree to leave the state for 25 years (Fredrickson). The couple then went through trying to convince their judge to excuse their sentences and convictions. After this, the final ruling of this case was the revokement of Mildred and Richard’s charges and ended laws against interracial marriages (Wallenstein). Many novels written have had instances where racial injustice was shown, including To Kill a Mockingbird. Written by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird was published in July, 1960. This novel is about a court case against a black man, Tom Robinson, accusing him of raping a woman and how the society was during that time period. It is written from Scout Finch’s point of view and her growing up in Alabama, in the 1930s. The main characters in the book are Atticus who is the father of Jem and Scout, Jem is Scout’s brother, Scout is the narrator of the book, and Tom Robinson was the black man that got accused of raping Mayella
