Dark, morbid--serene, bloody and violent, all things that are associated with the zombie apocalypse. As the genre has set its course through the minds of the young and old alike, there have been few novels to come and challenge the “norms” of this relished ideology of dystopian societies. However, M.R. Carey has come to present a new and fresh aspect to the zombie sub-genre. There are few to none that follow in his steps in such a manner. M.R. Carey’s book A Girl with all the Gifts has brought a new lens to how people perceive this genre. Even though some scholars believe that the subject is overdone they can also agree to some extent that M.R. Carey has rejuvenated the zombie genre. As Melanie travels through her endless solitude with its monotone routine, she comes to befriend her teacher Ms. Justineau. After getting to know Melanie, Ms. Justineau makes the “mistake” of returning Melanie’s friendliness. This, in turn, agitates Parks the head soldier; having become aware of the situation Dr. Caldwell attempts to dissect Melanie, in an effort to find a cure to the Ophiocordyceps fungal infection. Carey has come to elicit great thought within the reader's mind as they review the pages of his story. It has not only brought great insight into the post-apocalyptic society but into what really makes the “zombie” tick. Melanie acts as a phenomenal vessel in which the next step of the zombie genre is to leap off of and bloom into a host of alternate interpretations. M.R. Carey does this through the following “…It was her desperate, obvious, hero-worshipping crush that tripped Justineau up, or at least threw her far enough off balance that tripping became inevitable”(M.R. Carey, CH 4). Teens and adults alike have the ability to enjoy a story that is not only a fantastic read but one that allows the reader to interact and imagine the things to come after the story ends.
