Major depressive disorder affects an individual with the acute but limited episodes of depressive symptoms that can range from 2 weeks to 2 years. Chapter 7 suggests that it’s important for clinicians to rule out other disorders prior to diagnosing a client with major depressive disorder. With major depressive disorder the onset usually occurs around 32 years of age affecting nearly 6.7% of the US population and women are 70% more likely to experience this disorder over men (p.169)
Persistent depressive disorder still are chronic disorder but it's less severe than major depressive disorder because an individual does not experience major depressive episodes end can experience some symptoms of depression longer than 2 months that can manifest

There are two forms of the bipolar disorder bipolar I and bipolar II. Bipolar I disorder is where a client experiences one or more manic episodes, or an extreme episode of depression. Wherein bipolar II disorder, has a shorter duration of about 4 days and also includes hypomanic episodes.
Cyclothymic disorder are chronic, but less debilitating then the bipolar disorders I and II and clients that suffer from this disorder don’t experience episodes longer than 2 months.

People that suffer bipolar disorders are usually put on medication such as lithium. Lithium helps replace the sodium in the body and has become an effective therapy when training acute Mania symptoms for those that have suffered a bipolar issue for more than two years clinicians frequently give lithium consistently as a preventive measure.
