In Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: The Story of Success, he discusses how redshirting children can provide helpful advantages, but he neglects the fact that there are negative consequences as well. The idea of redshirting stems from parents’ fear of whether their child is ready to go into such a challenging environment or not. The age of the child does not matter in this case, it is the amount of work they put in to achieve their goals and do good in their education. Missing a year could jeopardize the student’s success in the future or even in the present. The dangers of redshirting include missing an important year of preparation in the classroom to be set for scholastic success and not gaining the proper development provided by older classmates. Redshirting should not be permitted in the American education system because the classroom is the best foundation to get prepared for educational achievement, and it allows the children to mature with their older classmates. So, even if a child is going to be younger than his classmates, parents should not hold their child back because the benefits of sending them on time are greater than redshirting.
