Malcolm Gladwell, author of The Outliers, uses the chapter “The Trouble with Geniuses Part 2” to compare and contrast two geniuses. These geniuses are Christopher Langan and J. Robert Oppenheimer. Langan was the oldest of his lower class family and Oppenheimer was the oldest of his middle class family.However, Langan had an arduous childhood where he dealt with an alcoholic father and the fear of starvation, while Oppenheimer had supportive parents and a community that saw his brilliance. For example, Gladwell (2008) describes how Langan “subsisted on government surplus peanut butter and cornmeal” for a summer during his childhood(p. 93).
