The two articles I read was ‘Managing Our Blind Spot: The Role of Bias in the School-to-Prison Pipeline.’ ‘Exploring the Impact of School Discipline on Racial Disproportion in the Juvenile Justice System’, and ‘Managing Our Blind Spot: The Role of Bias in the School-to-Prison Pipeline’ was about how over the years schools have slowly started to criminalization the youth of today, especially those of color and with disabilities, and they cover this up with things like “zero tolerance” policies and harsh school disciplinary practices. The article talks about how instead of improving school safety policies, they are instead pushing students out of school and more into the juvenile justice system. In a post-Ferguson world where you are starting to notice that police are using excessive force with students, these cops have tasers, and pepper spray and most of the time this type of weaponry isn’t even necessary. …show more content…
This article goes into more details about how this disparity is largely due to the failure to admit the bias that schools have when deciding disciplinary decisions. ‘Exploring the Impact of School Discipline on Racial Disproportion in the Juvenile Justice System’ talked about how African-American youths were overrepresented in many juvenile justice system, and the research the article did also showed that schools shared a matching in the way they disciplined students. This has led to what is called a “school-to-prison pipeline” for minorities.
