In the passage, Martha Reed described the hardships that her family encountered as they traveled across the plains. One hardship that was evident was the short supply of food. According to the text, “There wasn't much to cook, as we were very short of rations”. This meant that their food supply was almost depleted. Even though there was a man in the company “who had provisions to sell,” his prices were so high until Martha’s father could not afford to feed his family, therefore they often went hungry.
