King's text delves into the complexities around the idea that high stress can warp the perception of reality and reveal different sides of someone and suggests that the circumstances of the surrounding environment can drive one to change and in extreme situations even force an individual to the brink of madness. King further expands on the idea that the physiological issues that one faces may make them a danger, however at times, the moments of respite, give an opening for manipulation of those around. An individual may become unpredictable in mood and behavior when changing. King illustrates this by writing “It was like a sudden glimpse of some incomprehensible machine that might be safe or might be deadly dangerous.”(King, 120) This quote shows the uncertainty that crosses one's mind and the state of apprehension that may be brought about by a moment of being incensed and causing harm to another. …show more content…
King writes “He opened his eyes and wiped his mouth with his handkerchief. He wanted a drink. Hell, he needed one.”(King P 268) This shows the addiction that Jack developed with alcohol and the word ‘need’ shows how the addiction has become a crutch to lean on in times of hardship and tension. Previously, Jack had given up drinking and had been sober for a while, but the distress had returned him to his previous behavior, showcasing the emotional complexities that many face. Furthermore, selfishness plays a big part in regret and inner turmoil which in many cases has detrimental negative impacts on one's well-being. What in the name of God were you thinking of?
