The university administration arranged a big meeting where student leader Mario Salvio was dragged down from the stage by police when he had tried to speak. This had initiated the Free Speech Movement causing the students to draft a resolution and present it to Academic Senate where it was passed. As a majority of the faculty had joined the side of free speech, the activists found themselves victorious and soon, shifted their focus on stopping American involvement in Vietnam War. A new committee called the Vietnam Day Committee was formed that carried out mass protests throughout the streets of Oakland and Berkeley for the next couple of years while facing tremendous police brutality. During this time, the country observed the emergence of the Hippie culture that was seen in the streets of San Francisco and spread quickly in Berkeley campus after a strike in 1966. While the political activists continued to try to stop Vietnam war, the Hippie culture simply tried to influence politics by causing a cultural change.
