Ways Culture Can Influence People’s Lives Some people feel like they are not a part of a crowd. They feel like they are lost because there is nobody around like them. Maya Angelou, the famous poet, felt the same way. Angelou did not think there was anyone around like her until she started to study culture. Culture can influence people’s lives by giving them a voice, confidence, and different beliefs. During Maya Angelou’s early life, she learned that culture can give people a voice. When Maya was seven years old, her stepfather molested her. That destroyed her spirit completely. From then on, Maya took a vow of silence. She only spoke to her brother, Bailey. When she did not talk to him, she read books and poems. One day a lady from Maya’s community spoke to her about how powerful the spoken word can be. She said, “Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning.” Angelou realized she was right.
