Government, this is a term that has endured a great number of changes and reforms throughout history. Government systems set and manage public policy and exercise executive, political, and sovereign power through customs, institutions, and laws within a state (What Is a Government). Government is apart of every individual's life, and the family structure has been a base outline for government. Every government is different and influences each other, such as the Greek City-States and the Roman Empire. This presented the daunting challenge of creating a government that avoided the pitfalls other civilizations experienced. It can be acknowledged that the creation of the United States government began with the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact had been signed by over one hundred people out of necessity and was the start of a new democratic nation with self-government. When the Mayflower passengers harbored on Cape Cod, the passengers came together to write a compact that would govern the way they lived. The Mayflower Compact had all adult males, excluding indentured servants, come together to elect a governor and assistants. When the colony’s population had grown, it became difficult to have the population gather for governing meetings.
