Medication non-adherence is a health care problem which is complex and multidimensional which can be caused by many factors.
Medication non-adherence divided into 4:
(1) Primary non-adherence- This is where the patient does not fill an initial prescription.
(2) Secondary non-adherence- It happens when refill of medicine is not done by the patient on time.
(3) Unintentional non-adherence- This is when patients forgets to take medicine or skips a scheduled dose.

Real-time symptoms and perceptions of medications which are the part of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) needed to be collected as it is a crucial next step in the evolution of data systems to improve population health. The collection of data such as predictive analytics, electronic medical records data, and PROs helps the physician to allocate medication to the right patients at the right time. For example, in Duke University medical records data and PROs of breast cancer patients was collected and combined to identify and personalize an intervention.
