Introduction: Castles

Being King is a hard duty, but in return for taking this role, you get to live in a luxurious castle. But having this luxury does not mean you are safe. A castle isn’t just a marvelous decorative dwelling for the royal family. Other aspects must be taken into consideration, especially safety and defense. The first castles served primarily for military housing. During the Middle Ages, the purpose of a castle was to house the King and the royal family. The King, of course, being a higher power, needs to be protected from any threats outside of the castle.
A generic medieval castle consisted of:
- Moat
- Gatehouse
- Barbican
- Outer Walls
- Towers
- Keep
- Buttresses
- Kitchens
- Priest’s Chapel
- Courtyard

Basically it had the same function as a battlement but it was bigger.
Outer Walls
Castles often had outer walls to protect its dwellers from any threat or invasive factor. They stretched around the perimeter of the castle and is usually taller that all structures inside it, except for towers and the Keep. Towers The most visible aspect of a castle is its towers. Towers were usually built inside the outer walls and on the corners of outer walls for soldiers and guards to get a better view of what’s outside the castle. They typically had tall and thin windows so that soldiers could shoot arrows through them and still be relatively safe from foreign projectiles. The Keep The Keep is an important last resort line of defense for the castle, incase the outer wall of the castle were to be breached. The Keep usually had enough room to store a good supply of food, water, and dwellers for up to a few weeks. Buttresses Although castles were magnificent and well built, it doesn’t mean they don’t collapse. Buttresses were pillars that supported the castle incase it were to tip over.
