Castles were the home of the Kings and Lords of the Middle Ages. Not only did the kings and lords live in castles, but their families and important officials also. Castles had have a lot of room and protection for all of these people. There were a lot of different parts of the castle that helped provide protection and a place for people to live. These different parts of the castle helped make the castle a castle. There were three parts of the castle that were used for the protection of the entry of the castle. The first part of the castle is the drawbridge. The drawbridge was used for the defense of a castle. The drawbridge was made of a wooden platform with one side fixed to the castle wall and the other side raised by ropes or chains. The part of the protection of the castle were the outside walls. The outside walls were used to protect the castle and also held the soldiers. The walls were 6 to 20 feet thick, up to 45 feet high, and up to 1500 feet long. Another part of the castle used for protection were the wall walks. The wall walks of a castle were used for protection of the castle. The wall walks made it easier for soldiers to move from tower to tower. The soldiers were able to see the approaching enemies from further out because of their high position. The third part of the castle used for protection were the towers. The towers were used for protection of the castle. The towers were round, not square, because the enemies could not topple the towers over. Another part of the protection of the castle were the turrets. A turret is a small tower resting on top of the main tower that was used as a lookout point.
