Mental health counselors work with individuals, families, and groups to address to address and treat mental and emotional disorders and to promote mental health. Counselors are trained in a variety of therapeutic techniques used to address issues such as depression, anxiety, addiction and substance abuse, suicidal impulse, stress, trauma, low self-esteem, and grief. In addition, counselors assist with job and career concerns, educational decisions, mental and emotional health issues, and relationship issues. Furthermore, counselor may be involved in community outreach, advocacy, and mediation activities. Mental health in counselors often work closely with other mental health specialists, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social worker, psychiatric nurses, and school counselors. New York State educational requirements for a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC) are master’s degree or higher in counseling that includes 60 semester hours and completion of specific coursework. Complete of a one year of supervision internship or practicum in mental health counseling (600 clock hours). Coursework/training must be approved by the education department including identification and reporting of child abuse. In addition, experiential and exam requirements are 3, 000 hours of post-master’s supervised experience providing mental health counseling in a setting acceptable to department and passing the National Clinical Mental Health Counselor
