The term Mexican American is a term that describes a broad group of people who have a connection to Mexico or Mexican culture, and live in the United States. Mexican Americans have been discriminated against over many generations, as early as the 1800s when the USA annexed Northern Mexico. This prejudice in the United States, such as the San Antonio pecan shellers strike and the Zoot Suit Riots. These examples stem from the fact that Mexican Americans are different from both Mexicans and Americans. They act in different ways than both groups and find it difficult to be fully considered part of either culture.Over the years Mexican Americans have faced different forms of injustice, from economic discrimination in the workplace to social discrimination …show more content…
Seeing as Mexican Americans can have a hard time fitting into a cultural group, a question is brought up: How discrimination arises from feeling the need to belong to a cultural community amongst Mexican-Americans? Discrimination arises from 3 different places: maternal cultural socialization, peer ethnic-racial discrimination, and ethnic-racial pride. Based on these three, “theory suggests that both cultural socialization and ethnic-racial discrimination would be more impactful on ethnic-racial pride later in adolescence” (Stein). The study concluded that not only is socialization with peers influential on how teens react to discrimination, but also how they perceive discrimination towards themselves and those around them. If they see it as something to learn from or as something that should be punished. These are determined by your social group and who you interact with in your cultural community. Acts such as bias against peers and hurtful reactions can also affect how proud someone is of their background. Families that are plagued with such negative circumstances must learn to overcome it positively as “mixed race families especially talked about inclusivity, ethnic/racial pride, and sharing family history” …show more content…
The demographic characteristics that the study is talking about are mainly about age and gender. With younger people facing discrimination more often than their older counterparts. Lastly, the experiences plus obstacles dealt with by Mexican Americans, as described in this essay, highlight the intricate interaction in between social identification, bias coupled with the mission for coming from. Significant amounts of courage are needed in order to overcome such obstacles, and as Simone Biles defines in the Athletic “The key ingredient to courage is vulnerability”. Many Mexican Americans find themselves courageous in overcoming all the negativity surrounding them. Possible ways of obtaining an easier ratification of discrimination would be: Educational programs that highlight ethnic acculturation, the significance of household background. Together with the sharing of social worths, we can play a critical duty in fostering a favorable self-image amongst Mexican American young people. These programs need to inform not just Mexican American households however likewise the more comprehensive area to grow an atmosphere of inclusivity as well as
