On December 19, 1836, the Congress of Texas declared the Rio Grande a boundary between Mexico and itself.1 Mexico, however, saw this as an illegal act for both legal and security reasons and so did the United States Congress when it said no to the annexation of Texas two times before they finally agreed.2/6 Fastforward, on April 24th 1846, American troops moved from an American campsite up the Rio Grande to see if Mexicans were passing over the Rio Grande into Texas.2 There, they were met with a large group of Mexican troops who were prepared to fight for the land they already own.
