Having five younger siblings’ means that I have been introduced to the responsibilities of midwives from a young age. This constant contact prompted my interest of bringing life into this world, which has now developed into a career I keenly wish to pursue. I have had the opportunity to observe baby scans, witness the tumour of a miscarriage and the birth of my sister. I am particularly fond of how the midwife supports the mother, when delivering the baby but from the early postnatal stages. This appeals to me as unlike other fields of medical care, midwifes play a sturdy supportive role in making sure the mother is at her best throughout her pregnancy and even after delivery.
I am currently studying a level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Sciences. The biological units are extremely helpful in regards to understand the bodily processes and structures; it has also been fascinating how ethnicity, age and gender affect the body’s capabilities to react to its environment. My main roles were to help customers with their purchases and also to organise and file paperwork. I was able to gain experience and key skills while helping people in vulnerable conditions was enough to give me a good sense of wellbeing. The skills I gained included an increase in self-confidence and interpersonal skills as I was always meeting and talking to new people. When visualising merchandise in the shop window, I developed my problem solving skills and team-work skills. I also tutor and mentor high school and primary school students from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds.
