Impact of Migrant Workers on Canada
Migration is a feature of social and economic life of the Canadian society. Collectively, these immigrants are an important driver of labor force growth and economic activity in Canada. Canada’s total labor market in 2011 was reported to be 18.7 million, of which 77.1% were Canadian- born, 21.2% were immigrants, and “non-landed immigrants” accounts for the remaining 1.7%. This exploitation is widespread and unacceptable. It often began in their home countries where they are charged exorbitant recruitment fees, and continues throughout their time in Canada. (Migrant Worker Report, 2013) According to the terms of the TFWP, it’s the employer responsibility to pay all recruitment and placements fees, as well as part of their travel cost to Canada (Faraday, 2012) therefore, its illegal that these workers are asked to pay high recruitment fees. There are concern that the increasing number of migrants is contributing to the entrenchment of a low-wage workforce, and erosion of human rights and labor rights for all workers. This increases the workers’ vulnerability. There are reports of workers been forced to engage in illegal or dangerous activities. (Migrant Workers Report, 2013) its common practice in the agricultural sector for workers having to operate machinery without proper training, or not given proper personal protective equipment when handling chemicals ((Migrant workers: precarious and unsupported, 2016). The El Contrato documentary highlights how lack of training often results in improper use of safety equipment, which can be fatal. (Marshall, 2015) A worker have the right to refuse doing tits the right of every worker to be informed when working with
