Through the utilization of researched-based curriculum, age appropriate classrooms, and targeted lesson planning, military child and youth programs have proven to be more effective than traditional preschool programs in preparing children for the skills they need to be effective and successful in kindergarten. The question of what skills should children have when they enter kindergarten draws a line in the sand when parents and early childhood educators meet (West, Hausken, Collins, 1991). With over 28 years of direct involvement in military childhood programs, I still see this debate continuing, with neither side advancing. To add even more complications to this child care world, add military regulations, mandated accreditation standards, highly mobile military families, military commanders coming and going at a regular intervals, and US governmental and political volatile changes, you are now entering the world of child care in the US military. …show more content…
Expectations for these military affiliated preschoolers is high and the pressure for those caregivers is just as intense. While the military child care programs are based on solid research and appropriate practices for young children (Zellman, Gates, Cho, Shaw, 2008), typically parents do not want to hear their children are just playing all day. They also want to hear their children are being ‘taught academic skills’ needed for kindergarten. Caregivers are stuck in the middle trying to balance what they are trained to implement in accordance with the National Association for Young Children (NAEYC) curriculum philosophy and its accreditation standards (NAEYC, 2017) and what parents think are the best kindergarten preparedness
