Everyone loves the underdog. It is General Eisenhower who said it the best, “What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight- its’ the size of the fight in the dog.” History has shown time and again that it is often those who are faced with extreme adversity are also those with the most fight. Life’s obstacles often throw curve balls into people’s lives and for those who lack the strength and perseverance; will quit. Those with the fight and will power to succeed will rise above the situation or obstacle, be successful and attain the will power to fight no matter what struggles they face to get there. Coming up as a young soldier I was shocked by how many people I met joined the military to have a better life. Instead of staying in their hometown or working in their family business they wanted to try something new, try something different. Some people I have met joined because other people told them they couldn’t do it. Being in the military isn’t for everyone. It’s a very selfless job. Some people just look at the military as a job. To me, its’ much more than that. It’s a way of life. I decided when I was a young soldier that if I was going to be a soldier I was going to be among the best. This is why I volunteered for the 75th Ranger Regiment. I knew that it would be challenging and every day I would be faced with obstacles and situations that other soldiers would not. Going through Ranger school was one of the most difficult times of my life. It was grueling mentally and physically, yet I was determined to not give up or quit. I knew that this was something I had to do and no matter how hard it was or how tired I became I had to keep pushing because failure was not an option. There were people who doubted me or questioned me for wanting to be a part of a unit that is known for dangerous missions and rapid deployments. I knew all of the obstacles I would face by being part of this elite unit, and I wanted to do that because if I was going to be in the military then I wanted to be a part of something great.
